Europaquarter's Emma-Kann Primary School nears completion

The city of Frankfurt is set to complete the construction of its latest addition to the school system, the Emma-Kann Primary School, located in the Europaviertel neighbourhood. The new building, designed by the office Dohle + Lohse Architects, will replace the more than seven-year operation in container classrooms.

The school's design features a compact layout with clearly defined functional areas, including spaces for all-day care, a cafeteria, administrative and teacher areas, a two-court sports hall, and a daycare center for children under and over three years old. The building will also include a partially sunken sports hall, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

The renaming of the school from the Europaviertel Primary School to the Emma-Kann Primary School serves as a pedagogical statement and aims to strengthen the school community's identification with the new school. Emma Kann was a Frankfurt educator who advocated for educational reform and children's rights in the early 20th century.

The new building has been designed with future expansion in mind. The stairwell and elevator have been prepared for this purpose, allowing for the school to grow as the demand increases. The school will be a four-story building with a capacity for up to five classes per grade.

The classrooms are organized in clusters on the upper floors and connected by central circulation areas, creating a bright, open learning atmosphere due to the large windows. This design promotes a sense of community among students and staff while ensuring a comfortable and efficient learning environment.

The city expects the construction of the Emma-Kann Primary School to be completed this summer, after years of delay. The school is scheduled to be ready for occupancy by summer 2025, marking a significant milestone in Frankfurt's school construction offensive.

The name change and the construction of the new school building are symbolic of the city's commitment to pedagogical values and the nurturing of a strong school community. The Emma-Kann Primary School is set to become an integral part of Frankfurt's educational landscape, providing a modern and inspiring learning environment for its students.
