Europe harbors a lesser-known Greek island, nestled within the Cyclades, boasting one of the most stunning hiking trails.
Exploring the Palia Strata Path on Amorgos Island
Nestled in the heart of the Cycladic archipelago, Amorgos offers a unique walking experience through its ancient mule track, the Palia Strata. This path connects Chóra, the mountainous centre of the island, to the picturesque village of Langada on the north-east coast.
The journey begins in Chóra, a charming town perched 400 metres above sea level. From here, the Palia Strata leads towards the sea, winding its way along ancient cobbled staircases.
As you progress, you'll encounter the steep staircase that takes you to the Chozoviótissa monastery, a 10th-century architectural marvel built on a cliffside. This impressive site is a must-see for any visitor to Amorgos.
Following the monastery, the Palia Strata continues north-eastwards, passing through the former high-altitude hamlet of Kapsala. The path then crosses the island's arid landscapes and cultivated slopes, offering captivating views of the Aegean Sea and inland scenery.
The walk continues towards Potamós, a quiet little village high above the Bay of Aegiali. Along the way, you'll pass by orchards and a few cultivated fields, adding a touch of greenery to the rocky terrain. Potamós is known for its restored houses, narrow staircases, and uninterrupted views over the northern slopes of the island.
The final stretch of the walk leads to the village of Langada. Renowned for its excellent tavernas and traditional layout with paved streets, staircases, and small chapels, Langada is the perfect destination to conclude your Palia Strata adventure.
The walk spans 14.5 kilometres and is best walked between April and October. It is recommended to allow between 4 and a half hours and 5 and a half hours, depending on your pace and breaks. To ensure you stay on the right path, it is advisable to use maps or GPS apps from local hiking associations or official tourism offices.
Whether you're an avid hiker or simply seeking a unique cultural experience, the Palia Strata path on Amorgos Island promises an unforgettable journey through time and terrain.
