Europe provides backing for Ukraine's cultural and historic preservation
The European Union (EU) has launched an initiative called 'Team Europe for Cultural Heritage in Ukraine', committing significant resources to safeguard and revitalise Ukraine's cultural sector, which has been under threat since Russia's full-scale invasion.
Since the start of the war, the EU has provided over €50 million in cultural aid to Ukraine. This aid has been directed towards various aspects, such as heritage preservation, artistic performance in and outside Ukraine, and facilitating access to culture and cultural heritage.
The EU Commissioner, Glenn Micallef, emphasised the importance of culture in defining nations, stating, "Nations are defined by their values, people, stories, and culture." In light of this, the EU has boosted its Creative Europe support for Ukraine, adding an additional €2 million to its 2025 Special Call for Ukraine.
Under this initiative, over 60 actions will be implemented as of 2025. These actions include targeted training, scholarships, and support for storing, showcasing, and preserving artefacts in danger. The projects will finance actions tailored to the needs of Ukrainian culture and cultural heritage, professionals, and artists.
In a recent study published by the Commission, steps have been outlined to aid Ukraine in establishing the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund. This fund is intended to provide long-term support to Ukraine's cultural sector.
Commissioner Micallef underscored the significance of cultural heritage, stating, "If you want to destroy a nation, you attack its culture." In response, the EU's support to Ukraine's cultural and creative sectors remains unwavering.
The EU's engagement under the 'Team Europe' initiative in 2025, under the name "Team Europe for Cultural Heritage in Ukraine", is aimed at supporting identity, resilience, and recovery in Ukraine's cultural heritage sector. By doing so, the EU hopes to contribute to a stronger, more resilient Ukraine.
