European Union legislative bodies, namely the European Parliament and the Council, have come to an agreement.
On a chilly August evening in Berlin, Union Berlin welcomed VfB Stuttgart for their first home game of the new Bundesliga season. The visitors, fresh from their DFB Cup triumph just three months prior, were looking to make a strong start in their return to the capital. However, it was Union Berlin who would come out on top, thanks to a brace from their new signing, Ilyas Ansah.
The game began with a flurry of activity, with both teams showing their intent from the outset. In the 12th minute, Julian Chabot headed powerfully towards the Stuttgart goal, but Rönnow was equal to the task, making a spectacular save to keep the scores level. Moments later, Rönnow denied Mittelstädt with a brilliant stop, preventing a certain goal for the hosts.
Union Berlin's pressure paid off in the 18th minute, as Ansah scored a textbook counter-attack goal to give the home team the lead. The new player, who had signed from an unspecified club, showed his class with a composed finish that left the Stuttgart defence in disarray.
Stuttgart responded well and created several chances throughout the game. In the 49th minute, Deniz Undav's header hit the crossbar, and Karazor's header went just wide moments later. Tiago Tomas pulled one back for Stuttgart with a consolation goal in the 86th minute, but it was too little, too late.
The game was temporarily halted in the second half due to a confetti choreography from the Union Berlin fans, which required the intervention of stewards. Despite the distraction, Union Berlin showed their efficiency in finishing, with Ansah scoring a stunning goal from around 25 meters in an unspecified time to seal the victory.
The defeat was a bitter disappointment for Stuttgart, who will look to bounce back in their next game. Union Berlin, meanwhile, will be buoyed by their impressive start to the season and will hope to build on this result moving forward.
