Europeans generally find religion and prayer less significant, according to a survey

In a global survey conducted by the Pew Research Center between 2008 and 2023, less than 10% of adults in several European countries reported praying daily. The survey, which consisted of two questions - "How important is religion in your life?" and "How often do you pray?" - was carried out across 102 countries worldwide.

The survey results revealed that only Turkey (60%) has a higher percentage of adults who pray daily compared to the average of the surveyed European countries, which range from less than 1% in Estonia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria, to a maximum of 10% in Latvia and Finland.

On the other hand, adults in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala and Paraguay, have a high tendency to pray daily, with 82% of adults in each country reporting the same. Costa Rica and Honduras also have a significant number of adults who pray daily (78%).

In contrast, the places that are most religious tend to be in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East-North Africa. For instance, at least 90% of adults in Senegal, Mali, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Rwanda, and Zambia say that religion is very important in their lives.

Interestingly, approximately 45% of US Americans say they pray daily, which is close to the median of 46% across the 102 surveyed places. However, only 42% of people in the United States say that religion is very important in their lives, which is below the average of the surveyed places (55%).

Far smaller shares in Singapore (36%) and Vietnam (26%) give the answer that religion is very important in their lives compared to Indonesia, where almost all adults (98%) are among the most likely worldwide to place a great deal of importance on religion.
