In a recent study conducted by TUI, the popularity of Europe's national parks was evaluated based on their digital presence and visitor reviews. The findings revealed a fascinating mix of well-known destinations and hidden gems.
Leading the pack is the Lake District in England, which excels in both Instagram hashtags and Google reviews. With over 36,000 5-star Google reviews and nearly a million Instagram hashtags, the Lake District showcases an excellent blend of nature, infrastructure, and accessibility that appeals to visitors.
Cinque Terre in Italy follows closely, boasting over a million Instagram hashtags and 43,000 5-star Google reviews. Known for its postcard-perfect scenery, authentic atmosphere, and coastal hiking trails, Cinque Terre offers an unforgettable Italian experience.
Despite a relatively low Instagram presence, the Peak District in England and Snowdonia in Wales are very popular with visitors, according to Google reviews. These classic English and Welsh landscapes offer breathtaking views and a wealth of outdoor activities, making them a favourite among tourists.
Germany's Saxon Switzerland National Park stands out as the best-reviewed German park, with over 8,000 5-star Google reviews. German parks generally lag behind in this category, but the Saxon Switzerland scores the best among them, offering a unique blend of sandstone cliffs, deep valleys, and picturesque villages.
Croatia ranks third in terms of 5-star Google reviews, with Krka National Park leading the way. The park has over 43,000 top Google reviews, demonstrating high visitor satisfaction. Despite a relatively low Instagram presence, Krka ranks third, thanks to its high number of Google reviews.
Italy and the United Kingdom each appear four times in the top ten most popular national parks in Europe. Spain and Poland also have a strong presence, with Spain's prominent parks including Ordesa y Monte Perdido, and Poland standing out with 23 national parks including the Tatra and Białowieża National Parks. Croatia is known for the Plitvice Lakes and Kornati National Parks.
The Harz and Berchtesgaden in Germany have a solid number of Google reviews but are relatively midfield in European comparison. However, the Black Forest in Germany ranks third on Instagram with nearly five million hashtags.
