Europe's Upcoming Data Strategy Aimed at Championing Europe's Dominance in the Data-Driven Economy

The Center for Data Innovation will host a discussion on the European Union's (EU) data strategy on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (CEST). The event aims to assess the progress of the EU's data strategy in strengthening EU competitiveness and innovation.

The discussion will feature speakers from various organisations, including representatives from the European Commission, the Center for Data Innovation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Visa, Facebook, and MyData Global. Malte Beyer-Katzenberger, the Team Leader for Data Policies in the unit for Data Policy and Innovation, DG Connect, European Commission, will also participate.

The speakers will delve into the proposed creation of a single market for data, intended to facilitate government-to-business, business-to-business, and business-to-government data sharing. The single market for data is a key component of the EU's data strategy, designed to overcome European challenges in realizing its potential in the data economy.

The event will be moderated by Eline Chivot, a Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for Data Innovation. The speaker at the event on Tuesday, July 22, 2020, was Daniel Castro. Other notable figures participating include Philip Malloch, Director of Economic and Social Policy at Facebook, Jessica Lennard, Senior Director of Global Data Privacy and AI Initiatives at Visa, and Teemu Ropponen, General Manager of MyData Global.

The European Commission released its data strategy in February 2020. The future EU legislative framework is designed to be informed by feedback from a public consultation that recently ended. The Commission also plans to roll out tools to give users more control over their data.
