Evaluation of the Sena motorcycle communication device

In the competitive market for motorcycle rider communication systems, Sena has a new challenger - Cardo. However, let's focus on the Sena Spider ST1, a device that emphasises the essentials, particularly communication between multiple bikers.

During our test ride on a Triumph Scrambler 1200 X, an unfaired all-rounder with a nostalgic style and plenty of power, we found the Sena Spider ST1 to be adequate for basic motorcycle communication at moderate speeds. The integrated battery's endurance allows for long, carefree rides.

The sound quality of the HD speakers in the Sena Spider ST1 is almost on par with the more expensive speakers of the 50S and 60S models. Yet, it should be noted that the Sena Spider ST1 is not waterproof and should be kept in a pocket during heavy rain.

The operation of the Sena Spider ST1 is simplified, making it user-friendly. It is also cheaper than the Sena 50S and 60S, making it a more accessible option for many riders.

However, during our test rides, wind noises were sometimes picked up by the Sena Spider ST1 and transmitted unfiltered to the speakers. Additionally, the microphone and AI-based noise reduction in the Sena Spider ST1 seem less sophisticated compared to its pricier counterparts.

For those who are critical of aftermarket solutions, helmets with integrated communication systems may be a better option. On the other hand, the devices from the Israeli company Cardo are partly compatible with Sena standards. BMW Motorrad offers an alternative with the ConnectedRide Com U1, a device that is compatible with Sena Mesh products and enables conversations over Mesh 2.0.

In conclusion, the Sena Spider ST1 is a good choice for everyday use, especially if the corresponding helmet is well soundproofed and you're not exclusively traveling at high speeds. It offers a budget-friendly solution for riders seeking essential motorcycle communication features.
