In a significant move towards addressing past wrongs and fostering a safer environment for its community, the Diocese of Hildesheim has launched an online survey to examine incidents of sexualized violence within its institutions. This two-year research project, funded with a substantial 1.6 million euros, is the third major study conducted by the diocese and covers the entire period from 1945 to the present.

The survey, focused on Catholic-run children's homes and youth work in parish communities, aims to provide transparent and traceable information about the results, and derive concrete steps for change and prevention. Bishop Wilmer, the current head of the diocese, has stated that this is not just a scientific task, but also his personal concern.

The survey is open to Catholics aged 16 and above who live or have lived in the Diocese of Hildesheim, which covers large parts of Lower Saxony and Bremen, and is home to around half a million Catholics. Participation in the survey is voluntary, and anonymity is guaranteed for participants.

Feedback from the survey can help understand and address past wrongs. Victims of sexualized violence are closely involved in the study, sharing their life stories and coping strategies. The research team has access to all available records for the study.

The study is based on two previous studies from 2017 and 2021, which focused on the tenure of Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen (1957-1982). It is important to note that Bishop Janssen, who died in 1988, is accused of abuse by several people. However, as of the available information, there is no public statement identifying who is leading the third major investigation into sexual violence in the Diocese of Hildesheim that started in April.

The goal of the survey is to examine actions, structures, and consequences systematically and draw conclusions for prevention, remembrance culture, and protecting against future violence. The survey's findings are expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts of the Diocese of Hildesheim towards healing, reconciliation, and the creation of a safer environment for its community.
