Spotlight on Carletta Carter: A Dentist Making a Difference in Rochester's Underserved Communities

In the heart of Rochester, New York, Carletta Carter is making a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of people in underserved communities. As the director of two clinics at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Carter has dedicated her career to improving dental health in her city.

Carter's journey in dentistry began unexpectedly. At the age of 17, a football accident left her with a fractured jaw, sparking a newfound interest in oral health. This life-altering event led her to pursue a career in dentistry, a decision that would ultimately change the lives of countless individuals in Rochester.

For the past 22 years, Carter has been a valued member of the Eastman Institute for Oral Health team. Her dedication to her work and her patients is evident in everything she does. Her story is one of resilience, hope, and a deep commitment to her community.

The University of Rochester Medical Center and its UR Medicine affiliates are proud to showcase Carter's story in their new video series, "Our Calling: Stories from Behind the Masks". This series aims to share the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the Medical Center's employees, who are called to provide excellent patient care, education, and research.

The series will be introduced in a 30-second ad before the half-time show during the Super Bowl on February 13, 2022. The Super Bowl ad will be supported by social media in Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Genesee, Orleans, and Yates counties. The ad will run on television and online, reaching thousands of people with messages of hope, resilience, and quality of care.

Each video in the series shares how these individuals felt called to work in healthcare and what keeps them going, especially during difficult times. Carter's story is no exception. The Super Bowl ad featuring her includes a touching glimpse of her with her mother and colleagues.

Carter's mother, who has Alzheimer's, is a source of inspiration for her. Every morning, Carter sings a specific song with her mother, a tradition that brings them comfort and strength. This personal connection to her work underscores Carter's dedication to her patients and her community.

Mark T. Taubman, M.D., CEO of the Medical Center and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, expressed his privilege in working with thousands of employees like Carter, who are committed to providing the highest quality of care.
