Awake NY x Air Jordan 5: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
Angelo Baque, the New York-based fashion designer known for his work in sneakers and streetwear, has collaborated with Jordan Brand to create a new version of the iconic Air Jordan 5 (AJ5).
Baque, who founded his own label, Awake NY, in 2015, was tapped for the collaboration earlier this year. His design for the AJ5 is a blend of staying true to the silhouette's DNA while adding unique elements.
The AJ5, first released in 1990, was designed by Tinker Hatfield, who is also known for creating the Air Max 1 and the Air Jordan 3. The shoe was inspired by World War II fighter jets, and this inspiration is evident in the Awake NY version, which features the Awake NY signature "A" carved into the sidewalls.
The AJ5 has been released in two color combinations: 'Arctic Pink' and 'Black'. The pink pair features 'Fire Red' accents, a nod to the original AJ5. This pink pair is a departure from the original while still being recognizable and familiar. The design also includes full-grain tumbled leather uppers and a suede toebox.
Baque has acknowledged the high standards set by Virgil Abloh's Off-White and Supreme's Air Jordan 5 collaborations. His approach for this collaboration is to at least match the level of these aforementioned collaborations.
Awake NY, heavily inspired by the rich culture of New York City, has gained popularity with celebrities such as LeBron James, Rihanna, and Gigi Hadid. Baque was wearing a vintage grey hoodie during a recent Zoom call, showcasing his casual yet stylish approach to fashion.
The AJ5 drop is significant as it coincides with Jordan Brand's 40th anniversary and 35 years since the AJ5 was first released. With its unique design and nod to tradition, the Awake NY x Air Jordan 5 is sure to be a hit among fans of both Awake NY and the Air Jordan series.
