Exercises for Maintaining Physical Fitness During Long Car Journeys
=============================================================================
In a picturesque setting at the Victorian castle resort of Mohonk Mountain House in Hudson Valley, New York, fitness trainers Conor Murphy and Austin Malleolo showcased a unique full-body workout routine. This workout, designed for those embarking on road trips, was captured by E. Lee White Photography, and an all-electric vehicle from Chevrolet, the Bolt EV, was on hand to add a touch of modernity to the scene.
The workout routine is divided into stretching and strength exercises, all of which can be performed in a parking lot, at a rest stop, or even at your final destination.
Stretching Exercises
- Hatch Hip Stretch: With the rear hatch open, stand with feet hip-width apart. Lift one leg, laying the shin across the trunk, and hold the stretch for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg.
- Trunk Hamstring Stretch: Stand facing the car, lift one leg so the heel rests on the edge of the trunk, and lean forward until a stretch is felt along the back of the leg. Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat with the other leg.
- Hatch Back Stretch: A stretch for the back that is not detailed in the provided information.
Strength Exercises
- Air Squat: Stand with feet just wider than hip width, hips stacked over knees, and knees over ankles. Extend arms straight out for balance, and perform 10-15 reps for 2-3 sets.
- Bulgarian Split Squat: Start with the hatch open, facing away from the car, about 2 feet from the back bumper. Reach your right leg back and rest toes on the edge of the trunk. Keeping core engaged and back tall, bend left knee to lower your body until left thigh is about parallel to the ground and right shin forms a parallel line with your back. Press into right heel to drive back up to the starting position. Aim for up to 3 sets, then switch sides.
- Elevated Push-ups: Place hands on the trunk of the car and perform push-ups, ensuring elbows are close to the body. Aim for 10-15 reps for 2-3 sets.
- Wheel Sit-ups: Lie on your back with your feet on the trunk of the car, knees bent, and arms extended over your head. Sit up, touching your hands to your feet, then lower back down. Aim for 10-15 reps for 2-3 sets.
These exercises can be performed in order for a complete total-body workout, or you can choose to focus on the strength exercises for a more intense session. The Bolt EV, with its impressive 238-mile battery range, was the perfect companion for this workout, demonstrating that even a road trip can be an opportunity to stay active and fit.
