In a surprising turn of events, the decision to remove 'Detmold' from the name of the LWL Open-Air Museum Detmold has been overturned. The institution that made the decision, the relevant responsible authority, has adopted the name variant "LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold" instead.
The change in the museum's name, which was met with massive criticism in Detmold and the surrounding region, will now include 'Detmold' in various forms of communication. This includes official documents, headers and titles of print media and websites, public promotional materials, social media, and press articles.
The museum's name, including the location reference, will also be displayed on the building near the entrance. In external communication, the representation "LWL Museum Hellerlecht | Detmold - Westphalian Museum of Culture and History" will be used.
The resolution, which was discussed by political representatives, the support association of the museum, the LWL administration, and the museum's chairman Günter Vogt, was passed today, the 4th of July. Vogt expressed his gratitude to Hilker for successfully intervening in Münster due to his cross-party contacts at the state level.
The mayor of Detmold, Frank Hilker, received numerous calls and emails urging him to fight for the retention of 'Detmold' in the museum's name. Hilker forwarded thousands of signatures from a hastily launched petition to the LWL in Münster, demanding the retention of 'Detmold' in the museum's name.
The change will take place simultaneously with the opening of the new entrance and exhibition building in 2026 and the subsequent transition of the museum to year-round operation. The display of 'Detmold' in the museum's name will extend beyond the building, with the institution being included in the corporate design trademark.
Mrs. Rüschhoff-Parzinger, a specific individual, was also thanked by Vogt for personally addressing questions in an extraordinary meeting of the support association. The LWL Landscape Committee has approved the internal name change of the museum to "LWL Museum Hellerlecht, Westphalian Museum of Culture and History."
With this decision, the open-air museum in Detmold will remain part of its future branding, ensuring that the city's connection with the museum remains strong.
