Exotic snake found in Waterloo Region: Humane society attempts to locate owner

The Cambridge & District Humane Society has launched an appeal to find the owner of an adult desert kingsnake that was discovered in Waterloo Region over the weekend. The reptile, which is not native to Ontario, was found on Lena Crescent in Cambridge.

Initially, the desert kingsnake was thought to be a native species, but further investigation revealed it to be an exotic pet. Its familiarity with human handling suggests it may have escaped from its owner.

The desert kingsnake, currently being housed at Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge in Nanticoke for recovery, has minor injuries but appears to have been well-cared for. If its owner is not found within the 72-hour redemption period, the humane society will assess the snake's overall health and behavior for adoptability.

If the desert kingsnake is not claimed, it may be made available for adoption or transferred to a rescue organisation. The Cambridge & District Humane Society partners with numerous rescue organisations to assist animals that may not be adoption candidates within the shelter.

The fate of the desert kingsnake after the redemption period will depend on its assessed adoptability and any potential need for specialized care. The process of assessing animals can take several days to weeks, or even months.

Anyone who believes the desert kingsnake may be theirs is asked to contact the humane society immediately. It's important to note that the owner's identity has not been disclosed.

The desert kingsnake, a type of snake known as a kingsnake, is not a common species found in Ontario's wild. The non-native reptile's presence in the Waterloo Region raises concerns about the release of exotic pets into the wild, which can disrupt local ecosystems.

The Cambridge & District Humane Society encourages all pet owners to ensure their animals are properly cared for and not released into the wild, as it can have harmful consequences for both the animal and the environment.
