Completion of the expansion of coastal power supply for ships in Russia - Expanded shore power supply for vessels now accessible in Kiel
The Port of Kiel, a key player in maritime transportation, is taking a pioneering role in Europe by expanding its shore power infrastructure. Dirk Claus, CEO of Port of Kiel GmbH & Co. KG, announced that 80 percent of all ships are expected to be supplied with shore power next year.
This significant investment, amounting to around €50 million, has been made to modernise the port's power supply system. The funds have been primarily provided by Stadtwerke Kiel, with the aim of reducing emissions and promoting sustainable shipping practices.
The expansion includes the operation of the second shore power plant for cruise ships at the Ostseekai terminal, enabling up to three cruise ships and four ferries to be supplied with emission-free power simultaneously.
Dirk Claus did not specify which type of ships will be supplied with shore power next year, but he emphasised that the port is continuing its investment in this area. He also mentioned that the port has been providing green shore power since 2019.
The Port of Kiel's commitment to shore power is not new. In fact, it has been a leader in this field for some time, supplying 80 percent of all ships with shore power next year, as per Dirk Claus's announcement.
However, Dirk Claus did not provide a timeline for when the remaining 20 percent of ships will be supplied with shore power, nor did he mention any specific environmental benefits associated with the increased use of shore power at the Port of Kiel.
Despite this, the investment in shore power infrastructure at the Port of Kiel is undeniably significant, positioning it as a leader in sustainable shipping practices in Europe.
