Expanded UN Security Council urged by Rinkevics
In a recent speech, Latvia's President, Egils Levits (Rinkevics), emphasised the need for change within the United Nations (UN) to rebuild trust and common values. Rinkevics, who is running for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council at the 2025 elections, believes that the UN no longer serves as a beacon of hope for the people.
Rinkevics expressed his concern about the underrepresentation of regions such as Africa in the UN. He believes that Africa has been neglected for too long and needs a permanent presence at the Security Council table. To address this issue, he proposes an expansion of the number of permanent members of the Security Council to make it more effective, inclusive, and accountable.
The President also advocates for the revitalisation of the UN system and reform of the Security Council. He suggests revisiting the decision-making process in the Security Council, including removing veto power for states involved in conflicts. However, Rinkevics did not provide specific details about the reforms he proposes beyond this.
Rinkevics emphasised the UN's commitment to principles of peace, security, justice, and human rights. He acknowledged the UN's potential shortcomings in preventing aggression and resolving conflicts. In this regard, he roundly condemned Russia's war in Ukraine and called for peace in the Middle East.
The President also highlighted the importance of the UN as a platform where no country's voice can be silenced by more powerful nations. He believes that the future of the multilateral system and rules-based order is a collective responsibility.
In addition to Latvia, India is also competing for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2025. An audio file of Rinkevics' speech is available for hearing.
Rinkevics also advocated for the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to deserve a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. He believes that rebuilding trust and common values is necessary to change the UN's current state. He called upon all nations to work together to achieve this goal.
In conclusion, Rinkevics' speech highlights the need for reform within the UN to make it more inclusive, effective, and accountable. As Latvia competes for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Rinkevics' call for change and his commitment to the principles of peace, security, justice, and human rights may resonate with other nations.
