Expanding ADAS and UX trends are driving Aptiv's wager on India, apparent with the establishment of a new technology center.
Aptiv, a Dublin-headquartered company valued at $19.7 billion, has inaugurated a new technical centre in Oragadam, near Chennai, India. This marks Aptiv's fourth engineering base in India and the second dedicated to advanced safety and user experience (UX).
The new technical centre will primarily focus on developing solutions for Indian vehicles, including Mahindra SUVs. It will employ 300 engineers, with a provision for 200 more.
Aptiv's Chennai technical centre is part of a $60 million investment the company has made over the past three years in India to expand its advanced safety and UX business.
The centre will spearhead the development of next-generation ADAS perception tools, in-cabin sensing technologies, and software-defined infotainment platforms. This aligns with Aptiv's aim to combine global scale with local relevance and deliver customer-focused solutions for India.
Javed Khan, Executive VP & President, Global Advanced Safety & User experience, Aptiv, expressed his expectations for an increasing level of sophistication in ADAS globally, including in India. He noted the growing demand for ADAS in India, due to product differentiation, as a factor making Aptiv optimistic about its prospects.
However, the higher cost of ADAS solutions becomes a bigger challenge in a cost-conscious market like India. Aptiv's centre will contribute to Aptiv's cloud-native architecture and leverage integrated capabilities across hardware, software, and edge technologies from Wind River, a software company Aptiv acquired in 2022.
The centre will also work on customizing ADAS solutions for the Indian driving environment. The ADAS trend is expected to have a significant growth between L1 and L2++ levels. Beyond L2++, the industry faces major cost hurdles for ADAS solutions.
Regulations will play a role in the penetration of certain ADAS features. The market for features below L3 Autonomous Driving is expected to see a major growth trend before L3 becomes mainstream.
Aptiv has a global engineering centre for advanced safety and UX in Bengaluru, India, which is the company's largest among five such centres globally. The company is currently looking to expand its customer base in India.
The name of the vehicle manufacturer with which Aptiv partnered to develop next-generation ADAS perception tools, in-cabin sensor technologies, and software-defined infotainment platforms for Indian vehicles is not explicitly mentioned in the provided search results. However, the focus on Mahindra SUVs suggests a strategic partnership with a major Indian automaker.
The opening of the Chennai technical centre underscores Aptiv's commitment to the Indian market and its ambition to lead the way in ADAS technology for Indian vehicles.
