Expanding Malaysia's railroad system to encompass ties with China and its broader regions is a top priority for the newly appointed head of KTM, the nation's railway operator.
New Acting CEO of KTM Aims to Revive Scenic Rail Route and Expand Network
Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin, the newly appointed acting CEO of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM), has taken the helm of the Malaysian rail operator with ambitious plans to revive and improve existing rail routes, as well as expand the network.
At 54 years old, Ahmad Nizam brings a wealth of experience to the role. He is well-aware of the significance of the revival of the scenic rail route from Butterworth in Penang to Bangkok in Thailand, a once-popular route that was suspended nearly a decade ago. This revival is one of his immediate plans for KTM.
The scenic rail route holds great importance not only for passengers seeking a unique travel experience but also for the Malaysian government, which is urging KTM to become profitable, financially sustainable, and reduce its funding gap from the government.
Under the supervision of Malaysia's transport ministry, Ahmad Nizam is focusing on both freight and passenger travel, with a particular emphasis on integrating Malaysia's rail networks with those of neighboring countries to increase revenue streams for KTM.
Ahmad Nizam sees the potential for expansive rail networks from Malaysia to Indochina, China, and even Europe. He believes that by connecting these regions, KTM can tap into new markets and provide a seamless travel experience for passengers.
The state of Malaysia stands to benefit greatly from these plans, as a revitalised and expanded rail network could boost tourism and trade, and strengthen ties with neighbouring countries.
In his plans for KTM, Ahmad Nizam is not only looking to the future but also recognising the importance of preserving the past. The scenic rail route from Butterworth to Bangkok, a symbol of the rich history of rail travel in the region, will once again be a testament to the potential of KTM to deliver a unique and valuable service to passengers.
