Expansion of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in British Columbia Receives $22.7 Million Funding from Canada
The Canadian Government has recently announced a significant investment to improve the availability of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in British Columbia. A total of $22.7 million CAD has been allocated for this purpose, with the aim of supporting the growth of zero-emission vehicles in the province.
This investment is part of a larger strategy to transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future. In addition to the British Columbia projects, $25 million CAD (approximately $18 million USD) has been unveiled to support 33 projects across the country, adding over 850 EV chargers nationwide.
The eight projects in British Columbia will install over 480 new EV chargers. These chargers will be strategically located along major highways, in public spaces, workplaces, and multi-unit residential buildings. The goal is to improve access for current EV drivers and address range anxiety for those considering zero-emission vehicles.

Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada, added that the chargers are located in high-demand areas and along busy highway corridors. Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, stated that the investments are part of Canada's efforts to become an energy superpower, build a cleaner economy, and improve competitiveness.
Since 2016, Ottawa has committed over $1 billion CAD to EV charging infrastructure. However, the names of the eight projects involving the Canadian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, provincial utilities, and municipalities to install over 480 new electric vehicle charging infrastructures in British Columbia are yet to be disclosed.
It's worth noting that the federal EV rebate program remains suspended, with Ottawa promising to reintroduce it in the future. This rebate program has been instrumental in reducing the upfront cost of EVs for consumers, making them more accessible.
