Expansion of tutoring program for Afghan refugees reaches Alexandria middle school

NoVA RAFT, a nonprofit organisation launched in 2021 to help Afghan refugees, has announced an exciting expansion of its program to Francis C. Hammond Middle School in the West End. This expansion is a result of a dynamic partnership with the Fresh Start Refugee Assistance Center, student leaders at Alexandria City High School, and George Mason University's Afghan Refugee Mentorship Program.

Alexandria, known for its welcoming community, has been among the top 10 cities in the U.S. for the resettlement of Afghan refugees, with more than 1,100 refugees being resettled. Recognising the need for continued support, NoVA RAFT has decided to extend its reach, offering after-school literacy instruction to Afghan refugee youth at school.

The program at Francis C. Hammond Middle School, located at 4646 Seminary Road, is not limited to English classes but also includes subject-specific tutoring and career exploration. This comprehensive approach aims to provide a well-rounded educational experience for the students, helping them thrive in their new environment.

NoVA RAFT is seeking volunteers who can come one or more afternoons per week to help with the after-school literacy instruction and subject-specific tutoring. Training will be provided for those who join the programme. The Facebook post from NoVA RAFT encourages people to join the organisation and help make a difference in the lives of these young refugees.

In addition to academic support, the program at Francis C. Hammond Middle School includes exciting outings as part of its offerings. These activities are designed to provide the students with opportunities for social interaction and cultural exploration, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

The expansion of NoVA RAFT's program is not limited to Francis C. Hammond Middle School. The organisation is also looking to collaborate with other schools in the area to continue its mission of supporting Afghan refugee youth.

For those interested in volunteering for the 2025-26 school year, tutors are needed at the Fresh Start Refugee Assistance Center at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. These volunteers should be able to provide after-school literacy instruction and subject-specific tutoring for Afghan refugee youth, available one or more afternoons per week.

NoVA RAFT has been making a significant impact in the community, providing English classes and assistance to hundreds of children and adults at the William Ramsay Recreation Center. With this expansion, the organisation aims to continue its mission, ensuring that Afghan refugee youth have the support they need to succeed in their academic and personal lives.

Join NoVA RAFT today and be a part of this inspiring journey, helping to create a brighter future for Afghan refugee youth in Alexandria. For more information, visit NoVA RAFT's website or follow them on Facebook.
