New Lotus Emeya Sports Saloon Debuts as Part of Electrification Push
The British automaker Lotus has unveiled its latest creation, the Emeya, a four-door sports saloon that marks a significant step forward in the brand's electrification journey.
The Emeya, which is part of Geely's stable that also includes Polestar, Volvo, and Smart, is available in two ranges: the 600 and the 900. The 600 range, starting at £84,990, consists of the 600, 600 GT, 600 GT SE, and 600 Sport SE. The 900 range, priced higher, includes the 900 Sport and the 900 Carbon, with the latter starting at £139,990.
One of the unique features of the Emeya is its HVAC system, which does away with physical air vents, instead using a virtual diagram of the dashboard for airflow control. The wing mirror adjustment, too, is a bit unconventional, with buttons on the door and multifunctional trackpad buttons on the steering wheel handling the job.
The Emeya offers instant availability of power for overtaking and fast-moving traffic, making it a compelling option for those seeking a long-limbed, ultra-high-performance saloon. It handles beautifully, with a balance and refinement to the suspension that cloaks its 2,550kg weight.
The interior of the Emeya is heavily committed to the touch screen, with many functions requiring swiping, menus, and icons. This might take some getting used to for traditional Lotus enthusiasts.
The Emeya and its bigger sibling, the Eletre SUV, share a visual language, showcasing a unique blend of independent innovation, motorsport ties, and avant-garde design. Super-hybrid versions of both vehicles are being readied, following the trend for range-extender powered hybrids.
However, Lotus is currently facing a downturn. Cuts to the UK workforce, rumors about ending UK production, and a general malaise over the luxury EV market have cast a shadow over the brand. Despite this, the Emeya's launch is a testament to Lotus's commitment to electrification.
It's worth noting that the Emeya is built in China, which may be politically unfortunate for some. The current owner of Lotus Cars since 2017 is the Chinese automotive company Geely Holding Group, with Li Shufu as the CEO.
The Emeya, in 600 trim, is considered desirable, with a combination of pace, space, successful design, and ergonomics. It is seen as a pioneering super saloon that makes a great alternative to the Porsche Taycan. However, it has not yet been released in the US, a market that would likely be interested in such a vehicle.
The flagship EVs often have surplus power to justify their high prices, and the Emeya is no exception. With its impressive performance, stylish design, and innovative features, the Emeya is set to make a significant impact in the EV market.
