Exploration of Cinema: Professor Johannes von Moltke scrutinizes the intellectual side of the Berlin film industry
Johannes von Moltke, a professor at the University of Michigan, is a man of diverse interests, with a particular fondness for German cinema. In the heart of Berlin, one of the oldest and longest-running cinemas, Moviemento in Kreuzberg, serves as a favourite spot for von Moltke, despite its less-than-ideal screening rooms.
Von Moltke is currently immersed in researching the cultural politics of the New Right as a fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. Amidst his busy schedule, he looks forward to watching the cinematic reflection on Auschwitz, the Holocaust, and the history of National Socialism, "The Zone of Interest". Sandra Hüller, who has been winning acting prizes during this awards season, stars in the film.
"The Zone of Interest" is not the only film that piques von Moltke's interest. He considers Ruth Beckermann's "Favoriten", a school-room documentary, as one of his festival favourites. Another film he hopes to see on the big screen soon is Andreas Dresen's drama "In Liebe, Eure Hilde", which he saw at the Berlinale.
Von Moltke's affinity for German cinema is not limited to watching films. He is the editor of the book series 'Screen Cultures: German Film and the Visual', which has published books on various topics across German and Austrian film history. A spin-off series titled 'German Film Classics' was published, focusing on the close, contextual analysis of one film at a time. These books are designed to be accessible and readable for students and cinephiles alike.
Interestingly, von Moltke recently published the English edition of the last letters exchanged by his grandparents, WWII dissidents Helmuth James and Freya von Moltke. The book serves as a poignant reminder of the past, echoing the themes explored in "The Zone of Interest".
In a nod to supporting neighbourhood cultural programming, von Moltke recommends seeking out one- or two-screen theatres. This advice aligns with his upcoming public lecture on May 7, where he is likely to share more insights about German cinema and its cultural significance.
