Mumbai, a city known for its great diversity, is the backdrop for Murzban F. Shroff's latest collection of stories, 'Muses over Mumbai'. Published by Bloomsbury India, this 252-page book offers a glimpse into the lives of various residents living in high-rise buildings across the city, each with their unique ethnic identities.

The collection includes stories that delve deep into the conceits, deceits, ambitions, triumphs, failures, affections, and afflictions of these Mumbai residents. From the first story, 'Ruffled Feathers', which introduces a diverse array of residents living in a high-rise building, to the second story, 'Meherunissa', the book offers a rich tapestry of Mumbai's population.

One of the standout stories is 'Hafta: A Price', where police constable Tiwari and his friend Sushila, a scavenger, grapple with a moral dilemma involving bribery to save Tiwari's father from a fine. Another poignant story is 'Meherunissa', which explores the transformation of one of Shroff's college friends due to the terrorist assault in Mumbai in November 2008.

The collection also reflects on the impact of significant events, such as the terrorist attack in Mumbai, on the city's residents. Some stories, like 'Accidental Karma', are based on acute observation but may also be rooted in personal experiences.

In his introduction, Shroff expresses his disapproval of recent developments in Mumbai, such as highways along the coast and tunnels with roadways. This can be seen as a Luddite protest by some and as the heartfelt concern of an observer and custodian of Mumbai by others.

Shroff, known for his stories in the book "Muses over Mumbai", uses his experiences and observations to reflect the city's diverse culture and spirit. The collection is a reflection of Mumbai's population, offering a unique and insightful look into the lives of its residents. The book is available for Rs 699.
