The South Palatinate region, especially along the Southern Wine Route, is a haven for wine enthusiasts and travellers seeking a unique experience. From September to October, the region comes alive with various wine festivals, each offering a taste of the local culture and cuisine.

The "Southern Wine Route Festival" takes place in Edenkoben from September 26 to 29, and the "Night of Open Cellars" in Landau's Nußdorf district on October 2 is another beautiful festival not to be missed. In Rhodt unter Rietburg, the "Festival of New Wine" takes place from September 19 to 21, and the "Federweißen Festival" in Landau from October 16 to 19 is highly anticipated.

The South Palatinate is renowned for its excellent Riesling wines, which are the main ingredient of the traditional Palatine wine spritzer. Alongside Riesling, another notable grape variety in the region is Burgundy, particularly white, gray, and late Burgundy. The demand for disease-resistant PIWI varieties, such as Regent and Calardis Blanc, has grown significantly in times of climate change, and the Julius Kühn Institute on the Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen is the epicenter of PIWI variety breeding.

Wine tastings are available at almost all wineries in the South Palatinate, with many wineries also offering gastronomic offerings. The Sonnenberghütte in Schweigen-Rechtenbach, for instance, serves local wines on Sundays and holidays along a 2.5-kilometer-long wine learning path. Good food and regional products are important to the Palatines, and many wineries in the South Palatinate also have Straußenwirtschaften or other gastronomic offerings.

The South Palatinate wine region includes towns and places ideal for wine tourism such as Landau, Edenkoben, Maikammer, Bad Bergzabern, Annweiler am Trifels, St. Martin, Impflingen, Schweigen-Rechtenbach, Kirrweiler, Ranschbach, Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach, and Weyher in der Pfalz. These towns offer wine tastings, vineyard walks, cellar tours, and traditional wine festivals.

Three ruined castles offer particularly stunning views of the landscape in the South Palatinate: Burg Landeck in Klingenmünster, Madenburg in Eschbach, and Burg Trifels. The Chestnut Experience Trail, which leads in six kilometers from Leinsweiler to Annweiler, is particularly popular in autumn and offers learning opportunities about chestnuts for children.

For those planning a wine tour, Hainfeld is a good starting point, as it has many good wineries, some of which are also architecturally interesting. The South Palatinate wine region can be explored with special picnic offers from the Southern Wine Route Association, which include picnic baskets filled with local products and tour suggestions.

Uta Holz's favourite place in the South Palatinate is the Scharfenberg castle ruin in Annweiler am Trifels, while Christian Bohr's heart belongs to the Kleine Kalmit. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or a casual drinker, the South Palatinate offers a wine experience like no other. So, pack your bags and get ready to embark on a wine tour adventure!

The South Palatinate wine region's official website is www.suedlicheweinstrasse.de. The best day to buy wine in the South Palatinate is Saturday, as wineries are typically open. No appointment is necessary unless you're coming with a large group.
