In the digital age, online privacy has become a pressing concern for many British internet users. With the average Brit having limited knowledge about VPN services, often their closest encounter with a VPN might be through a YouTuber.

This lack of understanding is particularly pertinent in the face of potential threats to online privacy, such as the EU's ChatControl and the unpredictable actions of the American government. The British government's introduction of the Online Safety Act, requiring ID-backed age verification for British internet users on a wide range of websites, has further highlighted the need for VPN recommendations for non-technical people.

The Online Safety Act, intended to regulate access to pornography, has caught essential and confidential services in its net. Opposition to the Act comes from various quarters, including 4Chan, the right-wing Reform Party, and Wikipedia. Despite the British government denying the idea of banning VPNs, the lack of knowledge on how to choose a VPN service has created a problem.

Experts are being consulted for recommendations on VPNs for friends and family. Two VPN providers that commonly receive praise are NordVPN and Surfshark. NordVPN is admired for its extensive server network and reliability, while Surfshark stands out for its unlimited simultaneous connections and affordability.

However, setting up more complex VPN solutions like WireGuard or finding a friend elsewhere in the world as an endpoint for a personal VPN are considered impractical for the average British internet user. Fortunately, VPN applications have become popular in Britain, reaching the top of app download charts.

While a side-by-side review of VPNs has been done extensively by other sites, the average Joe is unequipped to make a sound judgement when it comes to trusting a VPN service with their web traffic. As such, it is essential to seek advice from experts and make informed decisions to ensure online privacy and security.
