The National Museum of American History, nestled in the heart of Washington D.C., offers a captivating journey through the annals of American history. From the hallowed Star-Spangled Banner to Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz", the museum showcases a diverse array of American artifacts that represent achievements across various fields.

However, the museum does not shy away from the darker chapters of American history. Shackles representing slavery and photographs of Japanese Americans confined to detention camps during World War II serve as stark reminders of pain and cruelty that have marred the nation's past.

The museum reflects the nation's successes on numerous fronts, from the battlefield to the kitchens and factories of food pioneers, on the musical stage, in the movies, and on other creative and industrious fronts. Yet, it also presents nuances and ambiguities, such as the founding father Benjamin Franklin who was both a gifted inventor and a slave owner who never freed his own slaves.

In recent history, the museum has incorporated exhibits that address topics such as privilege, slavery, food justice, the exploitation of Filipinos, and the network of oppressive Native American boarding schools. These exhibits serve as a reminder of the racist landscape many immigrants encountered upon arrival in America.

The museum's halls also pose thought-provoking questions on the fundamentals of Americanism, such as "How should Americans remember their Revolution and the founding of the nation?" and "What does patriotism look like?"

One of the museum's most significant restoration projects is the gunboat Philadelphia, which is being restored for next year's celebrations of America's 250th year. The Philadelphia, a symbol of how citizens of a newly formed nation came together despite overwhelming odds against their success, requires the nation's attention and vigilance to preserve it for future generations.

The museum's exhibits have not escaped the attention of former President Donald Trump, who has expressed his desire for the Smithsonian museums to tell a simpler tale of American pride, power, and accomplishment, without focusing on the nation's dark history. The museum, however, continues to present fulsome tributes to the contributions of immigrants and narratives about the challenges they faced.

In December 2019, the House impeached Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. On January 13, 2021, Trump became the first president to be impeached twice, with the charge for his second impeachment being incitement of insurrection based on his challenge of the 2020 election results and his speech on January 6.

The museum also pays tribute to Hawaii's last sovereign before its annexation by the U.S., Queen Lili'uokalani, who is quoted on a banner asking, "Is the AMERICAN REPUBLIC of STATES to DEGENERATE and become a COLONIZER?" A ukulele on display, made around 1890 by a sugar laborer who worked on the kingdom's American plantations before a U.S.-backed coup overthrew the monarchy, is held up by the museum as a symbol of anti-colonial independence.

Trump has criticized the museums on social media, stating that they focus too much on the country's past mistakes and not enough on successes, brightness, or the future. Despite this, the National Museum of American History continues to serve as a powerful testament to the complex and often contradictory history of the United States.
