Exploring the Artistic Repair Process in Kader Attia's J'accuse
Kader Attia, the French-Algerian artist and curator of the 2022 Berlin Biennale, has inaugurated his latest exhibition, "J'accuse," at the Berlinische Galerie on April 27. The exhibition, a powerful exploration of themes such as colonialism, cultural identity, and post-colonial repair, features a series of grotesque busts of French servicemen injured in World War I.
In his 2020 installation, The Object's Interlacing, Attia discussed the restitution of African cultural artefacts. This theme continues in "J'accuse," as the busts in the exhibition were actually made in Algeria, symbolizing an inversion on colonial exchanges.
The title of the exhibition, "J'accuse," is a reference to Émile Zola's 1898 open letter to the French government, accusing them of antisemitism in the Dreyfus affair. By choosing this title, Attia highlights the ongoing impact of colonialism and imperialism, and the need for accountability and repair.
Attia's work often explores how art can be used as a means of healing from past injuries like slavery and imperialist oppression. The installation serves as a reminder that World War I involved vast swathes of the world through the mobilization of Western imperialist manpower.
Meanwhile, Mati Diop's Dahomey won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in February 2023, adding to the vibrant cultural scene in Berlin. With the opening of "J'accuse," the city continues to showcase the work of artists who use their craft to challenge and redefine the status quo.
As Attia's exhibition continues to run, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with thought-provoking art that encourages reflection on the complex and often troubled history of colonialism and its ongoing consequences.
