Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at Thackeray's residence in Mumbai. This was Fadnavis' first meeting with Thackeray since assuming the role of CM in December last year.

The meeting, which lasted for over an hour, occurred in the context of the upcoming all-important Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls. The BJP is attempting to gain power in the BMC, and the MNS, with significant votes in certain areas of Mumbai, could aid the BJP in its bid to unseat the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena from the BMC.

However, the talks during the meeting are not currently known. Raj Thackeray, MNS chief, had extended support to the BJP during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but the MNS chose to contest the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections independently and failed to secure a single seat.

The meeting has sparked off speculations of a possible alliance between the BJP and MNS for the upcoming BMC polls. Thackeray recently criticized the BJP for allegedly inducing leaders involved in multi-crore scams into the state cabinet, and the BJP dismissed these allegations, accusing Thackeray of spreading misinformation about the party.

Raj Thackeray also questioned the legitimacy of the 2023 Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha election results, prompting a reaction from the BJP. Fadnavis stated that the meeting was not political in nature.

In a surprising turn, Fadnavis mentioned that Thackeray had previously called him to congratulate him on becoming CM. This meeting marks a significant thaw in the strained relations between the two parties due to Thackeray's recent criticism of the BJP.

It is important to note that the Bombay High Court has criticized the state over its inaction during the Maratha protest, but this information is not directly related to the meeting between Fadnavis and Thackeray. A separate incident involved a man being rescued by the Indian Air Force after being trapped in a flooded river for 12 hours in Chhattisgarh.

This meeting between Devendra Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray on Monday in Mumbai indicates a possible political dialogue or collaboration, but the details of any potential alliance remain to be seen.
