Giorgio Armani: A Life in Fashion and Legacy in Luxury

Giorgio Armani, the iconic Italian fashion designer, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82. His closed wooden casket, adorned with white roses, was displayed in a darkened room lit by paper candles at the Teatro Armani for a two-day public viewing, drawing hundreds of mourners.

Armani's life and career were marked by an unwavering commitment to his craft and an expansion of his empire beyond fashion into luxury hotels, cosmetics, accessories, and interiors. His influence on the fashion industry and Hollywood was profound, and tributes have poured in from both since his passing.

Armani's journey began in 1983 when he opened an office in Los Angeles with the aim of dressing celebrities. This move marked the start of his ascent into the upper echelons of the fashion world. He was credited with inventing red-carpet fashion, and his designs graced the bodies of countless stars.

In the years that followed, Armani kept top-to-bottom control of his company, ensuring that every aspect of his brand reflected his vision. His dedication to his work was such that he missed the Paris Armani Prive show on doctors' orders and cancelled his menswear show in Milan due to health reasons.

Armani's final interview, published just days before his death, revealed that Leo Dell'Orco, who heads Armani's men's style office, would play a significant role in managing his empire. Dell'Orco, Ferrari chairman John Elkann, and Armani's niece and nephew will each hold 15% of the voting rights, while the Giorgio Armani Foundation will hold 30% and the remaining 10% will be divided among other family members.

The city of Milan has declared the day of Armani's funeral as a day of mourning. Donatella Versace, among others, paid her respects to Armani at his closed casket. His funeral will be a private ceremony, but the public viewing of his casket will last all day Saturday and all day Sunday at the Teatro Armani.

At the time of his death, Armani was one of the richest men in the world, with a net worth estimated at $11.8 billion. His impact on the fashion industry and the lives of those who wore his designs will be felt for generations to come.

As the world says farewell to a fashion legend, we remember Giorgio Armani not just for his contributions to the world of luxury, but for his unwavering dedication to his craft and his ability to transform the way we see red-carpet fashion.
