FC Bayern Munich, with no competition in sight:
The 2024-2025 Bundesliga season is shaping up to be an exciting one, with FC Bayern Munich once again expected to claim the title, according to a survey of coaches. However, the Bavarian giants are not without their challenges, as they navigate internal divisions and deal with the departure of key players.
Holger Badstuber, a former national player, has voiced concerns about the Bundesliga's future, stating that it needs to show backbone or risk continuing to slide due to a lack of trust in homegrown talents. His words echo the sentiments of many as the league faces criticism for being a "farmers league" for the Premier League, due to the frequent departure of top players.
Max Eberl, FC Bayern Munich's sporting director, has been working to strengthen the team, with a particular interest in signing Christopher Nkunku, a former Leipzig player. However, Uli Hoeneß, a supervisory board member, has reportedly undermined this personnel planning by advocating for a loan player. This internal discord leaves coach Vincent Kompany in a difficult position, as different factions within the club seem to want to go in different directions.
Despite these challenges, FC Bayern Munich has made some notable signings, including Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and Tom Bischof from 1899 Hoffenheim. However, they have missed out on securing the services of Florian Wirtz, who joined FC Liverpool instead. Wirtz's departure is a significant blow for Bayern, given his promising talent and the fact that he was expected to fill the void left by the departures of Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, and Kingsley Coman.
Bayer Leverkusen, the 2023-2024 champions, have also faced a significant overhaul, with the departure of coach Xabi Alonso, Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah, Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky, and Jeremie Frimpong. This dismantling of their championship team's axis leaves them in a difficult position as they look to defend their title.
Meanwhile, FC Liverpool's lineup for the Premier League season opener includes several players who were previously in Bundesliga teams, such as Frimpong, Wirtz, Ekitike, Endo, and Szoboszlai. This influx of talent from the Bundesliga is a testament to the quality of the league, but it also highlights the challenge of retaining top talent.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund has only made one significant signing, Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of Jude Bellingham. The rebuilding process at RB Leipzig, after their worst season since promotion to the Bundesliga, is also underway.
Horst Steffen, Werder Bremen's new coach, believes Bayern Munich has the best team in the Bundesliga, while Heidenheim's Frank Schmidt believes the gap between other teams and FC Bayern Munich is too large to be closed.
Despite these challenges, Vincent Kompany remains optimistic about the new season, with a focus on taking a step forward, despite FC Bayern Munich already having over 80 points last season. His outlook, along with the team's recent signing of Luis Díaz for around 70 million euros from FC Liverpool, suggests that Bayern Munich remains the team to beat in the Bundesliga.
As the 2024-2025 Bundesliga season gets underway, it promises to be a fascinating and unpredictable campaign, with FC Bayern Munich facing both internal and external challenges. The question remains, can they overcome these obstacles and continue their dominance, or will we see a new team emerge to challenge their supremacy?
