FCT Administration Cracks Down on Land Use Act Abuse

A significant development has taken place in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the Land Use and Purposes Clause Committee, chaired by Muktar Galadima, Director of Development Control, submitted its report to Minister Nyesom Wike on Tuesday. The committee's findings revealed that several properties on key streets, including Ademola Adetokunbo Street, Aminu Kano Crescent, Yakubu Gowon Street, and Gana Street, have been illegally converted to residential, commercial, or mixed usage, violating original agreements.

In response to this abuse of the Land Use Act, Minister Wike has imposed a hefty fine of ₦5 million on allottees and land title holders who have contravened the Act. The fine is payable within 30 days. For those who fail to comply, the committee has recommended severe sanctions, including sealing of property, removal of buildings and structures, revocation and withdrawal of titles.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Mrs Nancy Sabanti Nathan has been appointed as the Acting Head of Service of the FCT Administration (FCTA). This appointment came following the death of the former FCTA Head of Service, Mrs Grace Adayilo. Mrs Nathan, who previously served as the Director of Finance and Administration in the office of the Honourable Minister of FCT, had been the Permanent Secretary of the Youth Development Secretariat of the FCTA until her new appointment. The appointment takes immediate effect.

In a related move, Minister Wike has also approved a 7.5% charge on the Assessed Capital Value of properties converted without the FCT Administration's knowledge or permission. The total capital value of the said properties is a staggering ₦1,037,478,716,500.

With these decisive actions, the FCT Administration is sending a clear message that it will not tolerate the abuse of the Land Use Act and will take swift and firm action against any violators. The public is encouraged to adhere to the regulations to ensure a well-planned and orderly city.
