Federal authorities conduct arrests in border control operations, under the supervision of BPOL NRW
In a series of events that unfolded on September 5, 2025, the German Federal Police made two significant arrests at Gronau train station and on the A52 motorway.
The first arrest involved a 36-year-old Hungarian who entered German territory from the Netherlands in the evening. Upon inspection, the Hungarian presented a valid Hungarian identity card. However, a data check revealed two arrest notices against him. One was from the Public Prosecutor's Office I in Munich for violating the Anti-Doping Act, with a remaining fine of 2,640 euros or a 66-day prison sentence. The other was from the Public Prosecutor's Office in Dresden for driving without a license, with a remaining fine of 450 euros or a 30-day prison sentence. The Hungarian was arrested on the spot.
The second arrest took place at the same location, but on a different day. On August 7, 2025, a 59-year-old Lithuanian was checked by the Federal Police at Gronau train station. It was discovered that the Lithuanian had two arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Oldenburg for theft and aggravated theft. The warrants stated that the Lithuanian still owed a total of 4,000 euros in fines or faced a 133-day prison sentence. The Lithuanian was unable to pay the fine and was arrested on the spot.
Both individuals were taken to the Federal Police Station in Kempen for further processing. The Hungarian, after paying a total of 3,090 euros to avoid the enforcement of the prison sentences, was allowed to continue his journey. However, the Lithuanian was taken to the prison in Münster to start serving his sentence.
The incidents occurred amidst the temporary reintroduction of internal border controls at all land-based Schengen internal borders, which was ordered by the Federal Ministry of the Interior on September 16, 2024. Additional costs of seizure amounting to 5,000 euros were also required in the case of the Hungarian.
These arrests highlight the continued vigilance of the German Federal Police in ensuring the safety and security of the country's borders and the enforcement of laws within its territory.
