Ferrari staff allegedly asserted that Lewis Hamilton was not desired by a significant majority (90%) of them, according to a former driver's assertions.
Lewis Hamilton Struggles to Adapt at Ferrari
In a surprising turn of events, six-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has found himself struggling to make an impact at his new team, Ferrari. After a disappointing 12th-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton called himself 'useless'.
Hamilton, who spent 18 years with Mercedes and its associated team McLaren before joining Ferrari, has yet to claim a podium finish in his opening 14 races for the Italian team. He currently occupies sixth place in the drivers standings, 42 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc.
The British racer's struggles at Ferrari have led to calls for a change in the driver line-up, with reports suggesting that Hamilton told Ferrari to 'change driver' as a result of his performance at the Hungaroring. However, it's worth noting that Hamilton has spent 20 years in the same team before joining Ferrari, making his recent struggles all the more surprising.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has admitted that he and Hamilton underestimated the challenge of joining Ferrari. Vasseur acknowledges that Hamilton is not a driver who changes teams frequently, a trait shared by fellow Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., who has changed teams more frequently than Hamilton.
Arturo Merzario, a former Formula 1 driver with ties to Ferrari, believes that Hamilton's signing by the Italian team was a commercial operation. Despite Hamilton's struggles at Ferrari, Merzario believes the best is yet to come from the British racer. However, Merzario also claims that 90% of Ferrari's employees did not approve of Hamilton's signing.
It is believed that the specific timing of Hamilton's arrival at Ferrari was not precisely stated to maintain strategic discretion. It became publicly known in early 2025 that he would switch to Ferrari, as evidenced by his current participation with the team during the 2025 season.
One of the challenges that Hamilton faces at Ferrari is the cultural difference between the Italian team and Mercedes. There is a bigger difference between Ferrari and Mercedes than between Mercedes and McLaren, culturally speaking. This cultural divide was underestimated by Vasseur and Hamilton, which may have contributed to Hamilton's struggles at Ferrari.
As Hamilton continues to adapt to his new team, fans will be eagerly watching to see if he can turn his fortunes around and claim his eighth World Championship title.
