FEU secures victory over La Salle, breaking a lengthy losing streak, as key playoff contest shifts significantly
FEU Tamaraws Secure Spot in UAAP Women's Volleyball Final Four
The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws have secured their place in the Final Four of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament for the second consecutive year. This comes after a hard-fought victory over the La Salle Lady Spikers, a match that ended in a thrilling four sets.
The win moved FEU to a 9-5 record in the elimination round, while La Salle fell to the same record, losing control of its fate for the twice-to-beat advantage. The score of the match was 25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 25-23.
Shevana Laput and Baby Jyne Soreno scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for La Salle, but it was not enough to secure the win. Angel Canino top-scored for the Lady Spikers with 25 points, but the team lost two of its last three games to end the elimination round.
On the other hand, Jaz Ellarina, Faida Bakanke, and Chenie Tagaod scored 13, 10, and 10 points, respectively, for FEU. Gerzel Petallo contributed 19 points to the Lady Tamaraws' victory, with 16 attacks, 2 aces, and 1 block. Lovely Rose Lopez sealed the deal for FEU with her last two attacks in the final set.
FEU setter Tin Ubaldo stated that the team is 'ready' for the Final Four and semifinals, but there is still much to work on. The win complicates La Salle's chances of getting the Final Four incentive, as a possible three-way tie with La Salle and UST at 9-5 will see FEU finish as the fourth seed due to an inferior set ratio.
This victory is a significant milestone for the FEU Lady Tamaraws' program, as it was their first win over La Salle since the UAAP Season 87 preliminary matches six years ago. Last season, the Lady Tamaraws took the twice-to-beat Lady Bulldogs to sudden death but were ultimately eliminated.
The win occurred on April 26 at the Araneta Coliseum, setting the stage for an exciting Final Four match against defending champions NU. As the second seed, NU will have home-court advantage, but the FEU Lady Tamaraws will be aiming to upset the odds and claim the UAAP women's volleyball championship.
