Fiber agreement in Baden-Württemberg has been sealed
Baden-Württemberg Signs Fiber Optics Pact for Digital Future
In a significant step towards a digital future, the state of Baden-Württemberg has signed the Fiber-Optik-Pakt, an agreement aimed at optimizing glass fiber infrastructure and mobile network coverage. The pact, which was signed at the Ministry of Digitalization, brings together 24 actors, including municipal associations, telecommunications companies, industry associations, municipal utilities, and other partners.
The pact, which has received nationwide attention, is based on the understanding that the expansion of fiber optics can only succeed through close cooperation between the public sector and private companies. Thomas Strobl, the Digitalization Minister, stated that digitalization requires strong alliances, and the Fiber Optics Pact is an example of this.
The 2025/2026 budget plans an additional 1.1 billion euros for the expansion of high-speed internet in Baden-Württemberg. Combined with federal funding, the total funding for broadband expansion in the state is around 6.74 billion euros. Since 2016, the state has provided over 3.2 billion euros for broadband expansion, and since 2020, Baden-Württemberg has received the most federal funding annually for broadband expansion.
The pact sets binding principles for the interplay of actors, including coordinating privately funded and subsidized expansion measures, joint progress documentation, and regular evaluation and development. The pact partners plan to increase the visibility, acceptance, and demand for fiber optic connections through joint communication efforts.
The pact also includes the introduction of a statewide Gigabit Atlas for transparent progress documentation of the Baden-Württemberg fiber optic expansion. This will provide a clear overview of the progress being made in the expansion of high-speed internet across the state.
As of 2025, there are no specific public records or announcements naming the companies or organizations that have joined the Fiber-Optik-Pakt Baden-Württemberg. However, since the pact received nationwide attention before its official signing, an ever-growing number of associations and companies have approached the ministry for information and potential participation.
The state government is supporting statewide broadband expansion with a billion-euro offensive. Minister Thomas Strobl stated that the goal is to increase the pace of expansion with bundled forces. The Fiber Optics Pact aims to create a high-performance digital infrastructure in Baden-Württemberg, marking a step towards a digital future for the state.
