Fifth Latvia Ceramics Biennale Debuts in Cēsis, Showcasing Emerging Latvian Pottery Geniuses

The Fifth Latvia Ceramics Biennale has opened its doors at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall, showcasing a collection of contemporary ceramic artworks under the title "FRESH: New Voices in Latvian Ceramics". This inaugural exhibition reflects the current trends in Latvian contemporary ceramics and brings together young women artists who have recently graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia's Ceramics Department.

The medium of ceramics, known for its unmediated, raw materiality, is inseparably tied to the bodily experience and presence. The curators of the exhibition, Aivars Baranovskis and Valentins Petjko, have noted that today's ceramic artists create pieces that speak to both global themes and personal stories. The exhibition suggests that ceramics dissolves the boundaries between art and daily life.

The rich programme of exhibitions and cultural events throughout August and September 2025 will take place in Daugavpils, Liepāja, and Cēsis. The biennale is both a platform for documenting achievements in the field and a continuous driver of new creative explorations.

The Latvia Ceramics Biennale is a landmark event on the European cultural calendar, supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia. This edition, themed "From Stardust to Lush Sprouts", is the most prominent and ambitious ceramics event in North-East Europe's contemporary art scene.

The exhibition features the works of Egija Grīnfelde, Katerina Geiduka, Laima Lauriņa, Linda Ķivule, Linda Zelta, Marta Prēdele, Megija Zonne, and Ojūna Batbajara.

Organized by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in collaboration with the Cēsis Exhibition Hall and the Rothko Museum, the biennale continues to be a significant event in the world of contemporary ceramics, offering a unique insight into the creative minds of emerging artists. The exhibition will be on view at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall until 28 September.
