Fifty years of Vietnam-Nepal relations mark a significant landmark in their mutual partnership
In a significant development, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan embarked on a historic visit to Nepal from August 23-28, marking the highest-level visit by a Vietnamese leader since diplomatic ties were established in 1975. This visit, the first of its kind, is expected to give a fresh impetus to stronger cooperation between the two countries.
Nguyen Thanh Hai, the current Ambassador of Vietnam to India, Nepal, and Bhutan, spoke at the beginning of Vice President Võ Thị Ánh Xuân's official visit. Ambassador Hai expressed optimism that the visit would foster stronger cooperation between Vietnam and Nepal.
Over the past five decades, Vietnam and Nepal have witnessed positive growth in their partnership. The need to step up trade and investment promotion activities and create favourable conditions for business delegations was emphasized. Vietnam could increase imports of Nepalese handicrafts, medicinal herbs, and natural products, while Nepal seeks to import consumer goods, machinery, processed agricultural products, and construction materials from Vietnam.
The growing recognition of Nepalese textiles and handicrafts in Vietnam is a testament to the burgeoning trade relations. More Vietnamese tourists are travelling to Nepal to explore Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, the Himalayas, and the sacred Buddhist site of Lumbini. A growing number of Vietnamese goods, particularly agricultural products, seafood, foodstuffs, industrial and consumer goods, are present in the Nepalese market.
Strengthening air connectivity, particularly through the opening of direct flights between Vietnam and Nepal, will be of great significance for tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and business operations. The Vietnam-Nepal Friendship Association and the Nepal Peace and Solidarity Council are actively organizing exchanges, delegation visits, and cultural activities to enhance mutual understanding.
The two sides have promoted visits and exchanges at various levels, while maintaining close coordination and mutual support at regional and international forums. The visit offers both sides an opportunity to review the progress achieved in bilateral relations over the past half a century, especially in recent years, and discuss concrete measures to advance cooperation in the years ahead.
Ambassador Hai suggests establishing frameworks and mechanisms for cooperation between the two countries' ministries and agencies in economic, trade, and investment ties. The visit is also expected to provide a platform for leaders of the two countries to share valuable experience and lessons, given Nepal's development efforts along a socialist-oriented path.
Investment cooperation, most notably in hydropower, has been a notable aspect of the partnership. Vietnam's Song Da Corporation has partnered with Nepal's Kalika Group to construct the Tanahu hydropower dam on the Seti River. The 250-strong Vietnamese community in Nepal contributes to promoting Vietnamese culture and cuisine locally.
As more Nepalese visitors come to Vietnam for tourism and business purposes, the future looks promising for the Vietnam-Nepal relationship. The visit by Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan is set to further strengthen these ties, paving the way for a prosperous and mutually beneficial partnership.
