Filipino bishop auxiliary in California publicly denounced by Pope
In a significant move, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr. Andres Ligot as the new auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of San Jose, California. The announcement was made on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Born in Laoag City in 1965, Fr. Ligot began his academic journey at San Pablo College Seminary in Baguio City, where he studied philosophy. He later pursued a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, in 1988. His thirst for knowledge led him to further his studies, and he also earned a master's degree in theology from Bidasoa International Seminary in Navarra, Spain. To cap off his education, he completed a doctorate in Canon Law at the University of Navarra.
Fr. Ligot's journey in the Diocese of San Jose began in 2003 when he served as a parochial vicar at St. John Vianney Parish. He then moved on to serve as pastor at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish from 2005 to 2009. His dedication and service were recognised, and he was appointed as the diocese's judicial vicar from 2008 to 2021.
In his new role, Fr. Ligot will be assisting Bishop Oscar Cantú in caring for the diocese's congregation, which serves approximately 513,000 Catholics across 49 parishes, three missions, one pastoral center, and supports 27 elementary schools and one high school. Sunday Mass is held in 15 locations throughout the diocese, which was established in 1981 and is centered at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in downtown San Jose.
Fr. Ligot has expressed his gratitude for the Holy Father's trust and Bishop Cantú's support. He has also promised to serve Christ and His people with joy, particularly those most in need. He is currently serving as pastor at St. Elizabeth of Portugal Parish and as vicar general and chancellor of the diocese.
Fr. Ligot's journey in the priesthood began on June 14, 1992, when he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Laoag by Pope John Paul II at the St. Peter's Basilica. His appointment as an auxiliary bishop marks a significant milestone in his career, and he is eager to continue serving the Catholic community in the Diocese of San Jose.
