Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala clinches first WTA singles victory, etching her name in history books
In a thrilling display of tennis, 20-year-old Filipino sensation Alex Eala clinched the Guadalajara 125 Open, becoming the first Filipino professional player to win a WTA singles title.
The journey to the title began with a hard-fought victory over Arianne Hartono in the opening round. Eala continued her impressive form, defeating Nicole Fossa Huergo in the quarter-finals and Kayla Day in the semi-finals.
The final match against Hungary's Panna Udvardy was a closely contested affair. After dropping the first set 1-6, Eala fought back valiantly, winning the second set 7-5. In the deciding set, Eala showed her resilience, securing a 6-3 victory to seal the title. The final scoreline read 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in favour of Eala.
Eala's coach, Daniel Gomez, has played a crucial role in her success. Based at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, Gomez has been instrumental in Eala's development, guiding her to become the first Filipino to win a WTA singles title.
Eala's victory in Guadalajara was not her only significant achievement of the season. She had previously made her first finals appearance at the Eastbourne Open in June. The Guadalajara 125 Open marked her second finals appearance of the season.
In addition to her success on the WTA Tour, Eala made history at the US Open in 2025. Her milestone victory over Clara Tauson secured her place in history as the first Filipino player to win a Grand Slam main draw match in the Open Era.
As Eala continues to make waves in the tennis world, fans eagerly await her next steps on the court. With her talent, determination, and the support of her coach, there's no doubt that we'll be seeing more of this rising star.
