Financial Assistance Provided in Grants for Various Projects or Initiatives
Oberlin University students have the opportunity to participate in the Flint Initiative Grants (FIGs), designed to support student-led initiatives that positively impact local communities. The grants are available for imaginative, artistic projects for students in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Double Degree Program, or Musical Studies.
To qualify for funding, applicants must demonstrate a clear project plan, community involvement, and alignment with the initiative’s goals. The application process requires a project title, summary, amount requested, narrative, budget, biographies, letter of support, and supporting audio or video files.
The project term for the Winter term 2026 is all of January 2026. Funding can range up to $4,000, but there are stipulations on expenditures. For example, there is a limit of $100 on acquiring capital goods, no student salaries, and no spending on liquor.
To access the grant form, applicants need to be signed into their Oberlin account. Two downloadable documents are available: Award Terms and Conditions, and Sample Expense Document. The Office of Conservatory Professional Development offers workshops, courses, and advising to help with the application process.
If a project involves the research of human subjects, it is recommended to review the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process and contact Susan Ellinger prior to submitting the application. Susan Ellinger, Associate Director of Professional Development, is the primary contact for reviewing proposals.
Students on leave are not eligible for funding. College of Arts and Sciences students may apply as part of a group project organized by a conservatory, double-degree, or musical studies student. Internal funding is not available to support participation in faculty-led Winter Term group projects.
Previously awarded FIGs grant recipients can apply for funding for a new project, provided the terms of the previous grant have been satisfied. The application deadline for the project is October 29, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Each discrete project may be funded only once by FIGs.
It is important to note that FIGs funding is not available to support an individual’s participation in a group winter-term project unless the individual’s use of the grant is to support distinctive work separate from that of the group project. Additionally, funding cannot be used to pay current Oberlin College students, faculty, or staff.
For more information, students are encouraged to attend Info Sessions for the project (TBD) or contact Susan Ellinger directly. Let's make a difference in our community through the Flint Initiative Grants!
