Finland aims to reestablish diplomatic ties with Russia following the conclusion of the Ukrainian dispute
In an interview with Yle, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has announced that Finland plans to restore relations with Russia after the end of the Ukrainian conflict. The current state of relations between the two countries is in a difficult state and practically non-existent due to the Ukrainian crisis, as acknowledged by President Stubb.
However, he expressed confidence that after the end of hostilities, the parties will begin building new formats of interaction. To this end, Finland is taking several measures.
One such measure is the construction of a new 200 km long fence on its border with Russia. This fence, according to President Stubb, is intended to enhance border security and control.
Furthermore, Finland, along with Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland, is prepared to mine sections of their borders with Russia and Belarus. This decision is a response to the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need for increased border security.
Despite these measures, President Stubb emphasised the importance of the geographical proximity and common history between Finland and Russia. He believes that these factors determine the need for a joint future between the two nations.
Interestingly, the statement did not contain specific information on which partners the Finnish government proposed for the realignment of relations with Russia after the end of the Ukraine conflict. It remains to be seen how these developments will unfold in the coming months.
In conclusion, Finland's decision to construct a border fence and consider mining sections of its border with Russia and Belarus is a clear indication of the country's desire to strengthen its security measures. At the same time, the intention to restore relations with Russia after the end of the Ukrainian conflict shows a willingness to engage in dialogue and build a more positive relationship in the future.
