Fire Department Mainz Hosts 51st New Year's Eve Swim: Scaled-Back Fun Over Shorter Distance
The Mainz Fire Department kicked off the new year with their 51st annual New Year's Day swim this morning. The event, held along the banks of the Rhine, attracted approximately 400 spectators who braved the chilly weather to witness the unique water rescue demonstration.
Mayor Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 a.m., and he was joined by several prominent figures from politics and society. The swim served not only as a showcase of the fire department's water rescue capabilities but also as an opportunity to foster contacts with other water rescue organisations.
Several rescue boats were present to ensure the safety of the swimmers, who braved the water temperature of around 13°C. Many swimmers wore creative costumes or used floating accessories to make the swim more enjoyable. This year, swimmers had to start from the stairs at the Kaiser Tor, as the fireboat was not available.
Despite the changed route, the New Year's Day swim was a great success, following the high-water cancellation in 2023. The event concluded in a cosy atmosphere at the Rheingoldhalle, with the proceeds from the accompanying donation campaign being donated to the "Frühstart e.V." association in Mainz, which supports premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children.
The New Year's Day swim also included participants from various locations, such as Aschaffenburg, Kaiserslautern, Ludwigshafen, Maintal, Main-Taunus-Kreis, Mainz, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Offenbach, and Wiesbaden. The income from the accompanying program of the New Year's Day Swim of the Mainz Fire Department this year was donated to the organization Viva con Agua, which supports hygiene and water projects in countries lacking access to clean drinking water.
