Fire Department of Mainz hosts 51st New Year's Eve swimming event, reducesdistance for equal enjoyment
Mainz Fire Department's New Year's Swim Returns with a Splash
The 51st annual New Year's Day swim of the Mainz Fire Department took place this morning, marking a successful return after last year's cancellation due to high water levels. The event, which saw around 200 brave swimmers take to the cold waters of the Rhine, was a celebration of camaraderie, community spirit, and resilience.
Mayor Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 a.m., alongside city's fire and disaster protection inspector, Mr. Stefan Behrendt. Besides the Mainz Fire Department, organisations such as the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) and various local swimming clubs participated in the event. The police reserve, water police, German Armed Forces, State Fire and Rescue Academy, the Technical Relief Agency, private diving clubs, and employees from Mainz's political and administrative bodies also lent their support.
Several rescue boats were present to ensure the safety of the swimmers, who wore creative costumes or used floating accessories to add a festive touch to the event. Approximately 400 spectators watched from the riverbank, with prominent figures from politics and society also present.
The water temperature of the Rhine was around 13°C, a chill that didn't deter the swimmers who plunged into the river and swam along the riverbank together. The Mainz Fire Department wishes all citizens a safe slide into the new year and all the best for 2023.
The proceeds from the accompanying donation campaign will be donated to "Frühstart e.V." Mainz, a non-profit organization that supports premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children.
