Fire engulfs gymnasium in Hannover-Misburg, causing extensive damage at FW Hannover
In a shocking turn of events, a fire broke out at the gymnasium of the Muhleneweg primary school in Hannover-Misburg on Thursday evening. The fire department received reports of the blaze at 18:44, but upon arrival, the fire had already spread to the building.
The fire spread quickly, engulfing the entire gymnasium. Tragically, the roof of the hall collapsed. Two firefighters suffered burns during the initial extinguishing measures, and a rescue vehicle was damaged due to the high intensity of the fire. One of the injured firefighters has already been discharged from the hospital, while the other is receiving treatment.
Mayor Belit Onay visited the scene and expressed her condolences, stating that the fire likely caused millions in damages. She further added that it is a hard blow to the students and sports clubs that use the gymnasium. Onay also thanked the emergency services for their brave and swift intervention and wished the injured firefighters a speedy recovery.
Approximately 110 emergency service personnel were involved in controlling the fire, with 97 personnel on standby at fire stations and volunteer fire departments for potential parallel deployments. The follow-up extinguishing work is expected to continue until late into the night.
Despite the extensive damage, the fire was prevented from spreading to the adjacent school building. However, the gymnasium was almost completely destroyed. The residents of the affected areas were advised via the warning apps NINA and KATWARN to keep doors and windows closed and to switch off ventilation systems.
The smoke cloud from the fire was visible over large parts of the east of Hannover. No further injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread to other school buildings.
