Firefighting crews from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen are headed to Spain to combat a forest fire.

In the heart of Spain's Extremadura province, a significant chapter in the battle against a raging forest fire was written, as the German Wildfire Module played a crucial role in its containment.

The German deployment group, led by Colonel Markus Weber, arrived in North-West Spain on August 21, 2025. Within hours, they set up a Base of Operations in Aldaenueva del Camino, Spain.

On August 22, 21 personnel with 7 fire engines were deployed to combat the nearby forest fire. The following day, two groups of around 40 personnel with 8 fire engines were deployed during the day. After around 9 hours of work, the personnel returned due to the decision to not deploy German fire forces at night.

The fire, which had been spreading rapidly, was no longer doing so thanks to the use of tactical fires (backfires) by Spanish forces. These strategic measures helped to encircle and isolate the fire, preventing its spread.

The terrain, however, proved challenging, making it difficult to prevent a re-ignition of the affected areas. To combat this, hotspots were discovered and extinguished, and control lines were laid out using hand tools.

On August 23, 2025, the day shift forces worked tirelessly to search for and extinguish hotspots on the southwest flank of the forest fire. The work of the previous day was continued with double strength in two separate deployment areas.

By the evening of August 23, 2025, the deployment sites were handed over to the local authorities, marking the successful containment of the forest fire in the province of Extremadura.

While the battle against the forest fire has been won, the threat of re-ignition remains. The German Wildfire Module and local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ready to respond should the need arise.
