In a spectacular display of football, the Florida Gators started their 2022 season on a high note, crushing the Long Island Sharks with a resounding 45-0 victory.

The defensive prowess of the Gators was evident from the very beginning, as Bryce Thornton, a standout player for the Gators, scored the first points of the season. Thornton recovered a fumble on a 37-yard return, setting the tone for the game.

Quarterback DJ Lagway, making his season debut, was in fine form, completing 15 out of 18 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. His first touchdown pass was set up by another fumble recovery by Thornton, this time on a spectacular one-handed 41-yard reception by Vernell Brown III.

Lagway's final six passes of the first half were all completions, demonstrating his precision and control. One of these passes found Eugene Wilson III for a touchdown, increasing the score to 24-0.

In the second quarter, Kicker Trey Smack III made a career-long 56-yard field goal, extending the lead further. Smack also added a 41-yard field goal in the second half. However, he missed a field goal from 39 yards.

Backup Tramell Jones Jr. took over in the second half and was impressive, going 12 of 18 for 131 yards with two touchdowns. He connected on a 4-yard pass to Tony Livingston and an 11-yard pass to Taylor Spierto.

The Gators' offence was relentless, with Jadan Baugh rushing for 104 yards and a score on nine carries. J. Michael Sturdivant also scored a touchdown on an 8-yard catch, increasing the score to 38-0 before halftime.

Defensively, the Gators outgained Long Island 451-86. The Sharks' quarterbacks combined to go 4 of 11 for 49 yards, struggling to find any rhythm against the stifling Gators defence.

The final score of the game was Florida 45, Long Island 0, a clear indication of the Gators' dominance in the season opener. The team will look to carry this form into their next game as they continue their quest for success in the 2022 season.
