Focus on strategic discussions, not commercial exhibitions – Presidency asserts about TICAD9 in Nigeria
Nigeria's Focus on Strategic Partnerships at TICAD9
Nigeria's delegation, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is actively engaged in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan. The focus of the delegation is not on trade exhibitions, but on forging strategic partnerships in key sectors such as power, industry, and agriculture.
At TICAD9, the Nigerian delegation is pursuing results in the power sector. The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is leading talks on power transmission improvements in Lagos and Ogun states, backed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Adelabu is also scheduled to meet with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as TOSHIBA and HITACHI, for possible collaborations in the power sector.
The National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN) and JICA are also partnering on vocational training, aiming to equip Nigerians with the skills needed for the power sector.
The Bank of Industry, led by Dr Supo Olusi, is engaged in high-level talks with JICA and other multilateral financial institutions. These discussions are aimed at securing funding for various development projects in Nigeria.
President Tinubu will also meet executives from Toyota, CFAO, UN-Habitat, UNDP, and the International Finance Corporation. These meetings are expected to result in partnerships that will support economic growth and development in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) will host a targeted investment forum at TICAD9 on Thursday. This event is expected to attract investors interested in the Nigerian market and provide a platform for networking and deal-making.
Ministers are also holding bilateral meetings at TICAD9. These meetings are aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and exploring opportunities for collaboration between Nigeria and other countries.
Recently, there were social media reports showing an empty booth labelled "Nigeria" at the TICAD9 venue. However, the Presidency's spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, described these reports as a misrepresentation of Nigeria's mission at the conference. He confirmed that Nigeria is actively involved in all critical diplomatic and investment negotiations at TICAD9.
In conclusion, Nigeria's participation at TICAD9 is focused on strategic engagements, not a trade exhibition. The country is seeking to forge bilateral and multilateral partnerships that will support economic growth and development in key sectors such as power, industry, and agriculture.
