Following the compositions of Richard Wagner, Bayreuth becomes the center for Baroque music.
The sixth edition of the opera festival, Bayreuth's Margravial Opera House, is set to open its doors on Thursday with Francesco Cavalli's "Pompeo Magno". This year's festival, titled "Bayreuth Baroque", is a separate venture from the Richard Wagner Festival and is dedicated to early music, as established by its artistic director, Austrian countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic.
Max Emanuel Cencic will not only direct and play the title role in "Pompeo Magno", but he will also conduct the Cappella Mediterranea. Joining him will be a stellar cast that includes Valer Sabadus, Marcel Beekman, Alois Mühlbacher, and local countertenor sensation Alois Mühlbacher.
The Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage site since it embodied baroque splendor in 1750, has a rich history of hosting operatic masterpieces. This year's festival promises to be no exception, with numerous gala events on offer, including solo concerts, duets, and concerts by Marina Viotti and the Orchestre de l'Opéra Royal de Versailles.
For those unable to attend, most program points will be broadcast or streamed by BR and Arte. In addition, a concert version of "Pompeo Magno" featuring this cast will be performed at the Musiktheater an der Wien on October 14.
Following the conclusion of "Pompeo Magno", Günther Groissböck will take the stage as Marke in "Tristan and Isolde". Initially, Georg Zeppenfeld was scheduled to perform in "Parsifal", but he had to step down on August 17 due to illness, with Günther Groissböck taking over. The final performance of "Parsifal" saw Elina Garanča and Andreas Schager in the leading roles. Andreas Schager played Parsifal, while Elina Garanča played Kundry.
The Richard Wagner Festival in the Franconian city ended on Tuesday, making way for the unique offerings of the Bayreuth Baroque Festival. With its focus on early music and a lineup that promises to delight opera enthusiasts, the festival is sure to be a highlight of the cultural calendar.
