Food Industry Evolution: Unveiling the Top Three Trends championed by Foodregio Startup Lab
In the heart of North Germany, the Foodregio Startup Lab, established in 2019, is working tirelessly to cultivate an ecosystem for food startups. With members in all five northern German federal states and expanding, Foodregio e.V. is playing a pivotal role in the economic development of the region, particularly in Schleswig-Holstein, where around 37,000 socially insured employees are actively involved in the industry.
The Foodregio Trend Day, a key event in the organisation's calendar, covers a wide range of topics. Last year's event, themed "Everything stays different - The new dawn of the food industry", delved into resilient food systems, globalization as an economic factor, and trends like neo-ecology. These discussions are essential as the industry grapples with the challenges of resource efficiency, including recyclable food packaging and strategies for substituting fossil raw materials.
Digital transformation is another focus area for Foodregio. The food industry is adapting to digital technologies to improve efficiency and customer experience. One example of this is the use of AI-based weather forecasts for AI-assisted production planning, helping to prevent food waste and contribute to resource efficiency.
Personalized nutrition, which serves preventive purposes and relies on analyses of metabolism, health status, lifestyle, personal preferences, or genetic profiles, is becoming increasingly important. The food industry is developing skills to combine mass production with personalization to meet this growing demand.
For those interested in looking further into the future, the Foodregio Knowledge Ship offers an online course on 'Food Foresight'. This course provides insights into the future of the food industry, equipping participants with the knowledge they need to navigate the changing landscape.
Professor Björn P. Jacobsen, from Foodregio e.V., emphasizes the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) as an enabler for various topics in the food industry. He also highlights the Lab's commitment to absolute confidentiality in consulting, ensuring that founding teams feel secure and supported in their journey.
The Hamburg metropolitan region is a significant player in the globalized food industry. Products from Lübeck are sold worldwide, and spirits from Schleswig-Holstein can be found in duty-free shops. The Foodregio Startup Lab focuses on supporting founding teams with an already advanced prototype, utilising an individual, honest, and trust-based approach.
In 2023, Foodregio has 18 members representing the federal states of Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony. The Foodregio Trend Radar and the annual Foodregio Trend Day are part of Foodregio e.V.'s efforts to support the food industry's development. These initiatives, along with the Foodregio Startup Lab, are helping to shape a sustainable and innovative future for the North German food industry.
