In a heartwarming event held at the Volksstadion, football legend Toni Kroos was honoured in his hometown of Greifswald on July 25. The event, attended by around 1,000 guests, including 500 children from local football clubs, celebrated Kroos' achievements on and off the pitch.

The day began with a symbolic game of table football, a nod to Kroos' early days in football, played between Kroos, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig, and Dr. Stefan Fassbinder, the Mayor of Greifswald.

Kroos was presented with the Order of Merit of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by Minister President Schwesig, in recognition of his social and societal commitment. The Mayor of Greifswald, Dr. Fassbinder, also thanked Kroos for his clear stance for democratic values.

Toni Kroos' foundation, which supports seriously ill children and their families, also received a boost during the event. The foundation was announced as a beneficiary of the funds raised from the auction of a custom-designed table football, in a special Toni Kroos-Greifswald design, signed by Kroos himself. The online auction will commence next week, with the link to be announced on the city's social media channels.

The event was not just about football. The foundation also supports the children's clinic of Greifswald University Medicine and the Ambulant Children and Youth Hospice Service Leuchtturm in Greifswald. The children's clinic provides essential healthcare services to young patients, while the hospice service offers palliative care to seriously ill children and their families.

160 young dancers from the Ostseetanz dance school also attended the event, adding a touch of arts and culture to the proceedings.

Toni Kroos, who began his football career in the Greifswalder SC football club, was praised as a role model far beyond the world of sport. His commitment to supporting children and youth sports in Greifswald was evident in the launch of the platform "Team DoppelPASS e.V." on the same day. This online platform aims to support children and youth football in Greifswald.

As Kroos announced his retirement from football after the home European Championship in the summer of 2024, the people of Greifswald celebrated not just a footballing legend, but a compassionate individual who continues to give back to his community.
